Swampscott is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, located 15 miles up the coast from Boston in an area known as the North Shore. From its fishing interests, Swampscott reached worldwide status as the place where Ebenezer Thorndike invented the lobster pot in 1808 to revolutionize lobster harvesting. Long known as a seafaring fishing village, Swampscott hosts a large commercial fishing fleet. Swampscott is home to 12 commercial lobstermen landing 227,392 pounds of lobster annually.
